Inwards - behind the scenes

Inspiration behind the artefact

Initial Spark

Inspired by the European Commission’s briefing, we explored how mental health and social wellbeing intertwine with the built environment. From this, we developed hypothetical design directions that visualise the future imagined in the foresight research.

Conceptual Evolution

The creation of the final artefact began once we reached a consensus with our partners. Throughout the concept phase, the idea evolved through collaborative feedback, refining the narrative to remain familiar yet introduce future technical artefacts and systems. A crucial choice was to base the fiction on multiple personas whose stories unite into one collective narrative.

Symbolism and Meaning

We designed the artefact with layers open to interpretation, filled with symbolic references including:

  • Post-consumerism and scarcity depicted through recycled plastics and ultra-durable goods
  • Influences from gamer culture seen in haptic-rich interfaces
  • Neurochemical wearables inspired by rave culture, reflecting acceptance of therapeutic drug use and deeper psychological insight

Influences

The artefact’s aesthetic draws on diverse cultural trends such as cybernetics, hyper-minimalism, alternative medicines, progressive workplaces, and hacker culture. The animation style takes inspiration from Belgian ‘ligne claire’ and Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock prints.

Designing the artefact: challenges and breakthroughs

Design process

An iterative approach guided us: starting with artefact designs and narrative probes to explore ideas, then focusing on the most powerful concepts for refinement.

Breakthrough moments

The design phase involved exploring multiple options and refining the message's efficiency, rather than a single 'eureka' moment.

Evolution of design

From simple looped collages, the project expanded into full scene animations conveying the complex psychological journeys of characters.

Realising the vision: making the artefact

Medium and techniques

We used speculative design and foresight tools such as horizon scanning, worldbuilding, and narrative probes. The animation combined sketching, storyboarding, 3D and parametric modelling, sound design, and post-production.

Audience engagement

INWARDS aims to be a platform where policymakers and the public gain fresh perspectives on emerging issues. We anticipate diverse reactions, hoping the fiction stimulates both desire and debate.
