Intergenerational fairness can only be advanced through collective effort. Alongside the official Strategy adopted by the European Commission, a set of complementary formats helps spark dialogue and exchange between colleagues, partners and wider communities.
Together with coalition partners, the EU Policy Lab has developed several formats to support this work. Some are ready to use; others are early prototypes designed to inspire experimentation and new ways of engaging with Intergenerational Fairness.
Four tailored communication formats were developed and prototyped. They are focused on policymakers, decision-makers, citizens and civil society inspiring action and discussion in the area of intergenerational fairness:
- Future Snapshots – Offer imaginative visions of possible futures, presenting different perspectives on what future generations might experience. These narratives serve as prompts for reflection and dialogue about long-term aspirations.
- Future Designs – Present practical, actionable ideas - projects, policies, and initiatives - that can help shape a fair and inclusive future for all. These forward-looking proposals support structured brainstorming and planning across short-, medium-, and long-term horizons.
- Set of IGF Tensions – Explore how potential conflicts within IGF domains can be reframed as opportunities for synergy. This format helps identify areas where differing perspectives can be constructively aligned.
- Examples of IGF Initiatives – Demonstrate how IGF operates in practice through real-world examples from across the globe. Each example highlights objectives, key features, and the expected or observed impacts.

- Future SnapshotsStories from possible intergenerational futures
Future Snapshots are short narrative visions that imagine everyday life in futures shaped by intergenerational fairness. Written by contributors from within and beyond the European Commission, these stories translate abstract principles into relatable experiences, emotions, and societal transformations.
They serve as prompts for reflection and dialogue, helping citizens and stakeholders explore long-term aspirations and consider what a fairer future might feel like in practice.
- Future DesignsTurning intergenerational fairness into concrete decisions
Design the Future is a curated blueprint with insights and ideas for policymakers. It distils the wide-ranging discussions and explorations carried out by the Coalition of stakeholders between February and October 2026.
Its purpose is to inspire and inform policymakers working on Intergenerational Fairness.
- Set of intergenerational fairness tensionsReframing conflicts as opportunities for balance
The Set of IGF Tensions explores key dilemmas that emerge when applying intergenerational fairness across different domains. Rather than treating these tensions as problems to be solved, the format reframes them as complementary forces that must be balanced.
By highlighting areas where perspectives may appear to conflict, such as investment in technology versus care, it encourages more nuanced conversations and supports the search for integrated, mutually reinforcing solutions.
- Examples of intergenerational fairness initiativesHow intergenerational fairness already works in practice
This project catalogue showcases real-world initiatives from across the globe that embody intergenerational fairness values. Each example highlights its objectives, key features, and expected or observed impacts, offering a practical view of how these principles can be implemented.
The format helps policymakers and practitioners learn from existing experiences, identify transferable approaches, and understand how intergenerational fairness can be operationalised in different contexts.
